Dag 4: Rabanal del Camino - Molinaseca
Aubergue Nuestra Senora del Pilar
Foncebadon
This cross forms the border between two different geographical areas: the Maragateria and the Bierzo. Already in the Celts there was a custom with a pile of stones to indicate the intersections of the roads and the boundaries between two territories. They hoped for the protection of the gods of the road and every passer-by threw a stone in hope
The road gods have been replaced by Mercury, the god of travelers, and over time this ancient practice became Christianized. The pilgrims now throw stones at the monumental hope
Some see this gesture as leaving their worries behind, others think of the Last Judgment "when the stones will speak." Their stone will then testify that they have completed their pilgrimage of life
